2023 - 2024 Results

April 4, 2024
Maple Grove

The tennis team started out the season with a 7-0 loss to Maple Grove in what was a great day of hitting for our players. Cooper played a great match at 1st singles in his loss. His opponent hit a big serve and a great forehand. Once Cooper got an understanding of how to handle this he was able to construct points pretty well. Austin Hacker played 2nd singles for us after playing only 2 varsity matches last year. This is Austin's 2nd year of playing tennis and to be at 2nd singles shows that he put some time into his game this past winter. Will Wagner played 3rd singles and played such a great 2nd set and stayed positive through the whole match. Blake and Ryder lost in 3 sets which they certainly had their chances. They communicated great with each other. Our 2nd and 3rd doubles all had 1st year varsity players in the lineup. They had much closer 2nd sets than their first which is what you want as a coach. There is no question as they keep playing they will get better. Please see the results below.

Spring Lake Park

Yesterday the boys tennis team beat Spring Lake Park 4-1 at the Bob Pivec tennis courts. Ryder H, Austin H and Will W won at 2nd, 3rd, and 4th singles all in straight sets. Joey Ditta and Howie Lundberg won in straight sets at 2nd doubles. It was their first varsity win and to do it in straight sets was incredible. Cooper Held (1st singles) split his match 4-6, 6-2 and Blake Degrote and Adam Ludke (1st doubles) were at 6-2, 5-4 when rain came to the courts. We will not get those finished at this time. JV also won their match yesterday. We travel to Cretin to play in a 4 team round robin on Saturday. Overall record is 1-2. Results are as follows

Blaine

On Tuesday the tennis team lost to Blaine 6-1. Going into the match their coach said it has been 6 years since we have beaten you. I am hoping this is the year, which it was. Ryder Held won in 3 sets while Austin Hacker lost in 3 sets. Cooper Held had a nice match at 1st singles losing in straight sets. Once our players can shake off a previous point or shot we will be a much better team.  Please see the results below.

Cretin, Champlin Park, Hill Murray

Tennis team competing in a 4 team round robin at Cretin. Not knowing much about Cretin and Hill Murray wasn't too sure how our matches would go. I did know that Champlin Park would be very good. The format was 8 game pro sets and at 8 all would be the tiebreaker. We lost to Champlin Park 7-0 which the score was pretty close in some of the points. Ryder lost 7-9 and last year he lost to the same player 6-1, 6-0. Austin Hacker lost 8-5 which he played a great game. 1st doubles with Blake Degrote and Nikolais Hirsimaki lost 8-5. Nikolais is in his first year of Varsity tennis and to be playing 1st doubles is an amazing accomplishment for a 10th grader. 3rd doubles of Howie Lundberg and Joey Ditta had a great match at 3rd doubles before losing 7-9. Against Hill Murray we won 5-2 winning at all of the singles points and 1st doubles. In the Cretin match we won 5-2. We won at 2, 3 and 4th singles. In the doubles we won at 1 and 2nd doubles. Looking at the beginning of the schedule I knew there were some tough matches going into the season especially after graduating 6 players off of the varsity from last year. To be at 3-3 is a great start to the season. The following players were 2-1 on the day. Ryder Held (2nd singles); Austin Hacker (3rd Singles); Will Wagner (4th Singles) Blake Degrote/Nikolais Hirsimaki (1st Doubles)  Results are as follows:

Hopkins, Irondale, St. Francis, Park Center

On Friday the tennis team beat Park Center 7-0 in wind gusts of 20-26 mph with temperature at 30 degrees. Lachlan Demmer and Ciaran McCarthy won their first match on varsity at 3rd doubles. On Saturday we held a 4 team round robin with Irondale, St. Francis and Hopkins. In the 1st match we competed against Irondale which we lost 4-3. Match came down to the 2nd doubles of Adam and Nathan. Because we started later in the morning we changed the format to 8 game pro sets with 7 point tiebreaker at 8 all. They were down 6-7 and I told them if they win we win and if they lose we lose. I also told them that if they lost they did not lose the match. They ended up losing but played a great match. In the next round we beat St. Francis 6-1. The last match of the day was against Hopkins which is a team in our section and I have never played them in a match in all of my years of coaching. As the match was going on we were down 2-3 with all doubles losing and Cooper and Austing winning in their positions. Cooper at 1st singles played an outstanding match. We needed Ryder at 2nd and Will at 4th singles to win their match. Will was down 5-6 and Ryder was down 4-7. As Ryder was still playing, Will ended up winning 8-6. I told Ryder that he was the deciding point and he came back and won 9-8 in the 7 point tiebreaker. Ryder and Austin won all 3 matches today, phenomenal day by our players. Overall record is 6-4. Results are attached.

Centennial

Tennis team had 2 matches over the last couple of days. On Tuesday we competed against Centennial and won 4-3. For the 2nd match in a row we swept all singles and lost doubles. All of the singles won in straight sets. On Wednesday we competed against Anoka and won another match 4-3. It was a battle for us to come out on top. Ryder and Austin won in straight sets at 2nd and 3rd. Austin is doing an amazing job in his 2nd year and having a 8-3 record at 3rd doubles, simply amazing. Will at 4th and Blake/Nikolai lost in straight sets. 3rd doubles of Ciaran/Joey were playing at 3rd doubles and during the match I saw they were having great points but we're getting stuck when they were coming in with balls at their feet. So during their 1st set I suggested that they both play back so the ball would always be in front of them. It seemed to work as they won 6-4, 6-2. 2nd doubles also played back but lost in 3 sets and battled hard for the whole match. So the match was tied 3 all with Cooper still playing at 1st singles.  Cooper was in the 3rd set and Coach Dan was working with Cooper. Cooper was down in the 3rd set 2-4 and ended up securing the win 6-4 with our 3rd 4-3 win in a row. So proud of our players on how they are competing. To lose 6 varsity players from last year and to have a 8-4 record is pretty awesome. Results are as follows:

Osseo

Tennis team beat Osseo yesterday 6-1 improving their record to 8-4. What a day with all doubles winning and improving their play. Singles continued their steady play. Ciaran and Joey won in straight sets at 3rd doubles for the 2nd time in two days. Nathan and Adam got back winning at 2nd doubles. Once they won their 1st set in tiebreaker it seemed like they got their shots going. Blake and Nikolai won in 3 sets, it sure was great watching them attack the ball at the net. Ryder, Austin and Will all won in straight sets. We are scheduled for a triangular tomorrow depending on the weather. Thanks to CTN for doing another broadcast so appreciative of their continued support. GREAT DAY TO BE A CARDINAL. Results are as follows:

Rogers, Foley, St. Anthony

Tennis results from Coon Rapids round robin. With roll drying tennis courts prior to the match starting we adjusted the format to 8 game pro sets with tiebreaker at 7 all. In the first round we competed against Rogers who is a team in our section and we were able to win another 4-3 match. We won at 2nd and 3rd singles while we lost at 1st and 4th singles. 3rd doubles came from behind and won 8-5 while 1st doubles lost leaving the match to Adam and Nathan securing the win. Last week they had an opportunity to win a match at 3 all so it was fantastic that they were able to win their match in the tiebreaker 7-4. Second round match we competed against the #4 ranked class team of Foley. We lost 5-2 with Cooper and Austin winning our 2 points. Cooper played amazing with hitting through his shots pushing his opponent around on the courts. Ryder, 2nd and 3rd doubles had close matches in their losses. Last round we competed against Saint Anthony Village and in this match we were without Nikolai and Will. We won 6-1. Nathan Yang won his first varsity match at 4th singles and Austin Hacker won all 3 during the day. Austin has won 13 matches in a row and considering he just started playing tennis last year he is doing an amazing job. On the season we are 11-5. I am awed on how we are doing especially after graduating 6 players off of last year's team. GREAT DAY TO BE A CARDINAL. Results are as follows:

Delano and Waconia

Yesterday in the afternoon Varsity and JV traveled to Delano to compete against Delano and Waconia. Delano is a team in our section so it was important for seeding purposes. Roll drying the courts has been a common occurrence this spring so we had to adjust the format due to getting 2 matches in the afternoon. In the first round we competed against Delano and won 6-1. All of the spots competed hard as they were competing against their opponents. Against Waconia we beat them 6-1 also. Made some changes in the second round by having Will play doubles with Nathan, with Will's phenomenal hands and Nathan's height they complimented each other extremely well. Nathan Yang won his second match at singles in the last 2 matches. It has been such a joy to have the Yangs out for tennis since 2013. 11 years in our tennis program is outstanding. On Tuesday we compete against Champlin Park, which are having an outstanding season.  It will be a tough match but it will be fun to play them again as we played them a month ago. On the season we are 13-5. GREAT DAY TO BE A CARDINAL. Results are as follows:
