The Varsity tennis team ended their season yesterday losing to Mounds View 7-0. We knew going into the match Mounds View was going to be ready to play, which they were. There were 2 decent matches yesterday 1st and 2nd doubles. Rob and Rumeal had many games where they were up and ended up loosing the games as well with Chad and Agassi. Hopefully they can use this as a spring board to work on a couple of items that didn't go so well yesterday. The team ended up the season with a 13-7 record, results are as follows:

1st Singles     Matt Morehouse     lost 0-6. 0-6
2nd Singles    Matt Gagnon          lost 1-6, 2-6

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the 16th we had the 5AA section seeding meeting which we got the 4th seed, several teams thought we should get the 3 seed even though Centennial beat us. Teams were looking at us defaulting our 4th singles and we played Maple Grove. We are playing Osseo in the 1st round of the playoffs at the Bob Pivec courts. Once I found out what we got I challenged the team to play better than the last time we played the teams we might face. So we pretty much had the same lineup in for the match except 3rd doubles was going to be completely different and the players were playing the same people. As you can see we beat Osseo a little more one sided than last week’s results, we play Totino Grace today at the Bob Pivec courts. Results are as follows, overall record is 12-6:
1st Singles  Chad Stearns won 6-0, 6-0
2nd Singles Rob Storrick won 6-0, 6-1
3rd Singles Rumeal Setts won 6-0, 6-1
4th Singles Matt Tellander won 6-0, 6-0

1st Doubles Agassi Mila won 6-3, 6-1
                  Matt Gagnon
2nd Doubles Alex Krutchen won 6-2, 6-3
                   Matt Morehouse
3rd Doubles Paul Klecker won 6-1, 6-0
                   Kendall Setts
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Team lost to Maple Grove today 3-4, we knew going into the match it was going to be tough especially after hearing from other coaches on how they have been playing. Highlights were 3rd singles with Rob Storrick coming back from a 2-5 to win the next 5 games to close out the match 7-5. 2nd doubles lost the first set and came back to win the next 2 sets. At 3rd doubles we lost the 2nd set 10-8 in the tiebreaker which the guts had set points but we couldn’t close out the match. The Varsity tennis team is 11-6, results are as follows:
1st Singles     Chad Stearns lost  4-6, 0-6
2nd Singles    Rumeal Setts won 6-4, 7-5

----------------------------------------------------
The Varsity tennis team lost to Centennial today where it was 85 degrees plus with at least 90% humidity. Points to mention 2nd doubles won in 3 sets and 2nd singles lost in 3 sets. It was great watching the players compete in such extreme weather conditions. At 4th  singles Kendall Setts played 3 games that probably went over 17 minutes and definitely all of the other points were into their 4th or 5th games. I talked to him about doing a couple of things and his next 2 games went very fast. Kendall told me he was dizzy and sweating in excess, we sat him down and ended up defaulting this point. It was good to see after the match was completed he was feeling a little better.  The Varsity tennis team is 10-5, results are as follows:

1st Singles      Chad Stearns lost  1-6, 4-6
2nd Singles    Rob Storrick lost  6-4, 3-6, 3-6

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Varsity tennis team beat Armstrong today at a windy Armstrong courts. There were several highlights Parker Hagen getting his first varsity win at 3rd doubles and watching 1st doubles win in straight sets with Matt Gagnon and Matt Tellander. The doubles team from Blaine recently beat the Elk River team that beat Rob and Rumeal earlier in the season. The cardinals play Champlin Park at the Bob Pivec courts tomorrow

--------------------------------------------------------
The Coon Rapids tennis team faced Andover today at their courts which the weather started out as cold and turned out to be a nice evening. Going into the match I knew it was going to be a good match based on the really good players they had in singles. Rumeal played a solid match at first singles against Grant Johnson and the highlight match for me was Agassi Mila at second singles. Agassi lost to his opponent this summer in a match so it was nice to see him beat him yesterday in straight sets.  Kendall Setts beat his opponent in straight sets to get his second win of the varsity season. The tennis team plays Rosemount at the Bob Pivec courts on 4/29. The tennis team is 6-3.  :

1st Singles   Rumeal Setts won 6-1, 6-1

The Coon Rapids tennis team faced 5th ranked Edina today at the Edina community center. It was a unique experience where they have 4 courts in a row and 1 by itself and 2 below a hill. We lost 7-0 with the matches closer than the end result. The tennis team is 5-3. Important information about each match:
1st Singles   Chad Stearns lost 6-7, 1-6 Chad had some key games that he had his chances to win. It was a great 1st set with a pretty good player.

3rd singles   Rumeal Setts lost   3-6, 6-2, 4-6 Rumeal had his chances and gave this player all he could handle
4th singles   Agassi Mila    lost   4-6, 3-6 Agassi's match was see sawing through the whole match

                       Jacob Bona

The Coon Rapids Varsity tennis team recently had a match and hosted a round robin tournament results are as follows. The tennis team faced Park Center in a Northwest Suburban Conference match. As we continue to look at various doubles combinations and to see if we can compete at a high level we were able to see Kendall Setts win his varsity match at 4th doubles after a couple of close matches. It has been great watching Kendall continue to improve his game and being competitive in every point. In addition watching Matt and Alex won at 2nd doubles considering up until now they have been playing 3rd doubles. In the 4 singles and top 2 doubles Coon Rapids only gave up 8 games out of 2 out of 3 sets. It was great to see the cardinals compete at a high level. Coon Rapids won 6-1 bringing their record to 2-2, results are as follows:
1st Singles Chad Stearns          won   6-0, 6-0
2nd Singles Agassi Mila            won   6-0, 6-0
3rd Singles  Matt Tellander        won   6-2, 6-0
4th Singles  Kendall Setts          won   6-0, 6-1

1st Doubles Rob Storrick

3rd Doubles  Parker Hagen
                      Raj Vinjamuri      lost      2-6, 2-6

Today March 23rd Coon Rapids hosted a round robin tournament where Totino Grace who is in our section, Saint Michael Albertville and Roseville competed. Due to the cold at the start 39 degrees and water on the courts (squeegeing which I hate) we didn't start till 10:00 intead of 8:30. Due to this we changed the matches to 8 game pro sets. In the first match we played Totino Grace that always competes hard especially ever since Dave Wareham took over the program. As with pretty much every match we changed the lineup to see who can play well together in the doubles. Singles was pretty much one sided with first doubles coming from behind to win 9-8 in a the tiebreaker. It was great to see Alex Krutchen to be able to play at first doubles with some great hands at the net and Agassi Mila hitting some solid ground strokes. Coon Rapids won 5-2 bringing their record to3-2, results are as follows:

1st Singles Chad Stearns           won   8-2
2nd Singles Rob Storrick            won   8-0
3rd Singles  Rumeal Setts          won   8-0
4th Singles  Matt Tellander         won   8-0

1st Doubles Agassi Mila
                    Alex Krutchen          won   9-8
2nd Doubles Paul Klecker
                      Matt Gagnon           lost   5-8
3rd Doubles  Matt Morehouse
                     Jacob Bona             lost  2-8

The next round Coon Rapids played the winner of the other match which was Roseville who going into our match was 6-1. As with the other matches we changed our lineup to see who can compete at a high level. We ended up loosing two matches in the tiebreakers which is becoming a goal we need to work on in practices. Coon Rapids won bringing their record to 4-2, results are as follows:
1st Singles RumealSetts            won   8-2
2nd Singles Agassi Mila             lost   4-8
3rd Singles  Matt Tellander         won   8-2
4th Singles   Kendall Setts          lost  8-9

1st Doubles Rob Storrick
                      Chad Stearns          won   8-1
2nd Doubles Paul Klecker
                       Matt Gagnon           lost   8-9
3rd Doubles  Matt Morehouse
                       Alex Krutchen          won  8-4

In the last match of the day Coon Rapids played Saint Michael Albertville which we played different players again. As the match going there were several highlights watching Chad Stearns come from behind to win at first singles. Chad started playing more consistently forcing his opponent to mis his shots. Paul Klecker played a solid game at 4th singles which showed me another option at this spot. Jacob Bona won his first varsity match at 2nd doubles with Matt Gagnon, Matt showed a lot of leadership in winning and supporting Jacob durin his play. In addition Robb Storrick and Rumeal Setts played solid all day winning all 3 of their matches. Coon Rapids won bringing their record to 5-2, results are as follows:

1st Singles Chad Stearns           won   9-7
2nd Singles Rob Storrick            won   8-4

1st Doubles Agassi Mila
                      Matt Tellander          won   8-0
2nd Doubles Jacob Bona
                       Matt Gagnon           won    8-3
3rd Doubles  Parker Hagen
                        Raj Vinjamuri         lost       2-8

Coon Rapids travels to Edina on Monday which will be the first time that since I have been coaching Cardinal tennis. Edina year after year they are one of the top teams in the state, this year they are ranked 5th in the state. Since the stae has been recording state champions Edina has been state champion 18 times so it will be a battle on Monday with 3 other matches during the rest of the week where we play Osseo, Andover and Rosemount. I believe the boys are starting to get their confidence, go Cardinals.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The boys tennis team played the 7th ranked team in the state yesterday in Wayzata, Coon Rapids lost 4-3. The conditions were very blustery and as the match continued temperature dropped. Varsity team has some several highlights with Chad Stearns winning a nice match at 1st singles and 3rd doubles were down 2-5 in the 3rd set to win 7-6 in the 3rd set tiebreaker. Next week we host Blaine and with CTN broadcasting the Park Center match.  On Saturday we will be having our round robin tournament at the Coon Rapids tennis courts. Results are as follows:

Tennis team now has an overall record of 1-2

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The boys tennis team lost to the 5th rated team in the state, Elk River, 0-7 at the Bob Pivec courts. The match was much closer then the score showed. All the spots competing hard and we lost to 2 – 3 set matches and 2 close matches where we lost the 2nd sets in tiebreakers.  Upon completion of the match I talked to the team and told them to use this as a learning experience and to remember what didn’t go well for them today and work on that in our next practice. Our next match is on Thursday against 7th ranked team Wayzata here at the Bob Pivec courts. Results are as follows:

1st Singles            Chad Stearns                     lost         0-6, 1-6

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This past Saturday the boys varsity team traveled to play In a 3 team doubles flight where we played Rochester Century and Rochester Lourdes. Each team played five doubles teams with 2 out of 3 sets with the 3rd set a super tiebreaker if teams split. Results are as follows:

Rochester Lourdes is one of the top teams in class A so it certainly gave our players a perspective on what we need to work on in our doubles game. Rochester Lourdes we were able to win at 1st doubles with Rob Storrick and Chad Stearns. At 2nd and 5th doubles it was great to see that we played better in the 2nd set than the 1st. We were without Rumeal Setts who hurt his thumb during practice on Thursday.

In the second round we played Rochester Century who has Eric Frueh who is going to the U of M on a tennis scholarship. Rochester Century is one of the top teams out of their section and has a great chance to make it to state this year. I believe our players at first doubles were taken a little back after the first 4 games but then they played some very competitive games which score does not reflect. 2nd and 4th doubles played some very good doubles and had some chances to pull out their matches in a victory.

The Coon Rapids tennis team started out on a winning note today by beating Becker 5-2. Considering it was only the second time that we hit outside and Becker played in a tournament this past weekend (that they won) it was nice to get the win. It was nice to see 2nd doubles pull out a three set win, especially after loosing the 1st set, Kendall Setts played a tough match considering it was his first Varsity match. In addtion,  to the varsity match the JV won 6-1. The results are as follows:
1st Singles Chad Stearns       won 6-2, 6-3
2nd Singles Rumeal Setts      won 6-4, 6-1
3rd Singles Matt Tellander      lost 6-4, 1-6, 2-6
4th Singles Kendall Setts        lost 3-6, 3-6

1st Doubles Rob Storrick
                     Agassi Mila         won 6-2, 6-3
2nd Doubles Plaul Klecker
                       Matt Gagnon      won 4-6, 6-4, 7-6
3rd Doubles Alex Krutchen
                      Matt Morehouse won 6-3, 6-0

Next Varsity match is when we go to Rochester to play Rochester Century and Rochester Lourdes.
