This past weekend the boys Varsity tennis team took second in the Cretin Derham Hall invite. The tournament was set up where each of the 4 singles and 4 doubles spots had to courts to play there 3 matches. The teams that participated were Cretin, Eastview, Hastings and our team. The challenging part of the tournament was the matches were at four different locations and having only one coach also added a twist. Highlights were Rumeal Setts winning two singles matches and beating a quality player from Eastview and watching him and Rob Storrick beat a quality team from
Cretin. Adam Nelson and Agassi Mila played 3rd and 4th singles winning 5 matches and loosing 1. Paul Klecker and Alex Krutchen played 3 very tough matches and they worked very effectively with each other looking like they are getting ready for sections. 1st Doubles and 1st Singles won 1 match each but lost all of their matches in the 3rd set (3rd set was a 7 point tie breaker). Individual results are as follows:

This weekend we play in round robin tournament at Cretin Derham Hall, Eastview and Hastings. These are 3 teams that we haven't played before in my 12 years of coaching. It should be interesting to see how we compare to some other good schools and hopefully it will prepare us for sections which start next Wednesday.

Coon Rapids tennis team had two matches this week after 6 matches last week. Against Andover the Cardinals won 5-2 which brought yesterday’s match against Centennial who is one of the top teams in the state as well as in the section. The match started pretty quick with Centennial wining at
1st singles, 2nd and 3rd doubles and Coon Rapids winning easily at 2nd singles and 3rd singles. At first doubles Rob Storrick and Bobby Tellander and Matt
Tellander playing 4th singles. I couldn’t imagine what is was like for Mr. and Mrs. Tellander watching their 2 boys competing to win their spots for the match. Rob and Bobby won the first set 6-3 and the lost 3-6. At the start of the 3rd set I told the players that we need them to win as well at 4th singles. After I talked to them Rob and Bobby won 6-1 in the 3rd set. Matt played one of the more exciting matches since I have been coaching. Matt lost the first 6-2, then won 6-2 bringing him to 3rd set. Matt started behind the 8 ball down 3-0 in the 3rd set which was the deciding point. As match continued Matt was down 5-2 Coach Stearns made a couple of suggestions to Matt which he did bringing the set to 5-4. Matt was so mentally tough in this game Matt had 3 match points that he won the points and ended up winning the match at 7-5 on an unbelievable shot. I asked Matt if he knew he was the deciding point, Matt said “I thought it was close” and then he smiled.
1st Singles Chad Stearns lost 2-6, 0-6
2nd Singles Rumeal Setts won 6-1, 6-2
3rd Singles Adam Nelson won 6-3, 6-1
4th Singles Matt Tellander won 2-6, 6-2, 7-5
1st Doubles Rob Storrick/Bobby Tellander won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1
2nd Doubles Agassi Mila/Paul Klecker lost 0-6, 1-6
3rd Doubles Alex Krutchen/Matt Morehouse lost 0-6, 4-6

Today Coon Rapids hosted the Bob Pivec tournament in one of the windiest conditions in recent memory. Throughout the day winds were in excess of 20 - 30 mph at the Cardinal courts. The tournament started out as a random draw where Coon Rapids drew Rochester Lourdes who are ranked Number 2 in class A. I was worried at first due to the tough matches we this past week against #4 Elk River and #6 Wayzata which led to two defeats. Rochester Lourdes at the top two singles spots have players who have gone to state, in fact there #1 was state champ last two years. Highlight was Rumeal Setts winning a three set match, 3rd doubles loosing in 3 set battle and Agassi Mila in tight match. In my opinion the results did not show how close the match was.The match results are as:
1st Singles Chad Stearns lost 0-6, 0-6
2nd Singles Rob Storrick lost 0-6, 0-6
3rd Singles Rumeal Setts won 6-3, 1-6, 10-8
4th Singles Agassi Mila lost 2-6, 3-6
1st Doubles Bobby Tellander/Adam Nelson lost 4-6, 3-6
2nd Doubles Matt Tellander/Hangi Lee lost 1-6, 0-6
3rd Doubles Matt Morehouse/Alex Krutchen 6-4, 2-6, 8-10
The next match we went up against White bear Lake who usually has a pretty tough team. The highlight for me was watching Jonathon Miller and Brandon Keller win at 3rd double for their first varsity win. During the tennis season Jonathon and Brandon work extremely hard and to win against White Bear Lake andshows how hard they have been working. Results are as follows:
1st Singles Chad Stearns won 6-1, 6-3
2nd Singles Bobby Tellander won 6-1, 6-0
3rd Singles Agassi Mila won 6-2, 6-0
4th Singles Adam Nelson won 6-0, 6-0
1st Doubles Rob Storrick/Rumeal Setts won 6-3, 6-1
2nd Doubles Matt Morehouse/Alex Krutchen lost 0-6, 7-5, 8-10
3rd Doubles Jonathon Miller/Brandon Keller won 6-2, 6-2
The last match of the day was against Minneapolis Southwest who beat us last year and we were playing them for third place. Every year Minneapolis Southwest has a very good team and after two tough matches were the Cardinals ready to face a tough match. I had some players that requested to play some different spots in the lineup and thought we would roll with the dice on this match. What was great was watching Alex Krutchen winning his first varsity match in singles and watching Rob Storrick play with a player he has never had in Matt Tellander playing a pretty good match at 2nd doubles. Also watching Agassi Mila win at 2nd singles a spot he has never played before winning was really great and especially listening to his brother Addison cheering him on. Addison is soon becoming our number one fan, thanks for your support we really appreciate it. I want to thank Mr. Tellander for helping with grilling today and taking various pictures through out the day. Results are as follows:
1st SinglesRumeal Settswon 6-0, 6-3
2nd Singles Agassi Mila won 7-5, 6-4
3rd Singles Adam Nelsonwon 6-4, 6-1
4th Singles Alex Krutchen won 7-5, 6-3
1st Doubles Chad Stearns/Bobby Tellanderwon 6-3, 6-1
2nd Doubles Rob Storrick/Matt Tellander won 6-3, 6-1
3rd Doubles Hangi Lee/Matt Morehouse won 6-2, 6-2
On the season the Cardinals are 9-3 with two matches next week. Great job today we found out that we have more flexibility in our lineup then I initially thought.

The boys tennis team came across an extremely tough opponent in Elk River. In the current rankings Elk River was #4 in the state in the latest polls. Highlights in the match was Rumeal Setts who won at 3rd singles 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a hard tough battle. Rumeal had to utilize all of his shots against his opponent to win his match. At 3rd doubles Alex Krutchen and Matt Morehouse lost a tough match at 6-4, 6-4. In each set they were up and Elk River battled back to take the sets. Results from yesterday match are as follows:

The next toughest match of the season is on Thursday at Elk River who in today's paper was ranked 4th in the state. Coon Rapids was ranked in the top ten but was mentioned as a team to watch along with Centennial and Totino Grace who the Cardinals play next week. The results are as follows:

The boys tennis team hit a stumbling block todayagainst one of the top teams in Wayzata high school. The Varsity team lost 6-1, winning their one point at 1st doubles. Bobby Tellander and Adam Nelson won 7-5, 6-3 in a match where they were behind in the first set until they broke serve to take the lead to win the set and take a commanding lead throughout the whole second set. Rob Storrick played a tough match where he was up in each set and on many occasions was ahead in other games but couldn't win the key points. It was a good match to build on for the rest of season. Cardinals play at home today against Osseo:

4/20/10
The boys tennis team continued their winning ways by beating Anoka today at their courts. We changed the lineups today to see how various players would by moving players up and playing players in singles versus doubles. The highlight for me today was watchinghow patient Matt Tellander was at 4th singles today. Those of you that have seen Matt play before knows he likes to end points quick but there were rallies of 20 shots or more on many occassions. Matt was working points in using all of his shots during his 6-2, 6-2 victory. It was also nice watching 3rd doubles bring up their intensity level up where they beat their opponents 7-5, 6-0 at 3rd doubles. The varsity team improved their record to 5-0 and 3-0 in the Northwest Suburban Conference. results are as follows:

4/15/10
The Boys tennis teamhad their most exciting win of the season by beating Maple Grove 4-3 at the windiest conditions of the year. At one point we were down 1-3 with 2nd singles, 4th singles and 1st doubles needing to win. Chad Stearns beat his opponent 6-2, 6-2 and then Agassi MIla with a few suggetions from Ted Stearns (volunteer tennis coach) and myself won 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 bringing the match tied at 3-3 with first doubles still playing. Once match became tied they were in the third set and Adam Nelson hearing the match was tied 3-3 still played like he had ice in his viens. Adam and Bobby won in dramatic fashion 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 sealing the victory for a 4-3 win. It was an extemely tough match but yet one we needed to get us prepared for furture matches. In the tournament we had 5 players that won their first varsity match ever.
